What Is Pigmentation/Melasma?

Melasma is a hyperpigmentary disorder of the skin characterized by blotchy dark patches on the face and forehead. It is triggered by both sun exposure and hormonal changes due to pregnancy, oral contraceptive use or perimenopause. Melasma commonly affects women of darker skin types and tends to run in families, only 10% of cases are men.

Effective Treatment For Pigmentation/Melasma

The treatment involves use of hydroquinone, retinoids, and other topical agents. Adjuvant therapy with IPL, Lasers, BBL, chemical peels and vitamin c iontopheresis may hasten the process.

Elos Plus

The Elos Plus treatments, which are among our most popular treatments, are an improved technology in non-invasive total skin rejuvenation. The combination of IPL, Diode Laser and radiofrequency (RF) energy works synergistically to improve the overall colour, tone and texture of skin. The technique is virtually painless and gives you almost instant results in the face, neck, hands and decolletage. By stimulating collagen production to plump and smoothen the skin, it visibly reduces wrinkles, pores and scars, while the IPL/RF modality treats pigmentation, spider veins and rosacea. The recommended number of sessions is 6 times at monthly intervals.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are clinic-based procedures where a chemical solution is used to exfoliate the dead cells on the outer layer of the skin, removing superficial pigmentation and other skin blemishes in the process, leaving the skin clearer, softer, and smoother. Specialized booster peels are also available for the treatment of acne and acne scars, as well as for the treatment of stubborn pigmentation. Most of our peels have no downtime, except for the TCA peels for scars, which can cause redness and flaking for a few days. As with all laser and chemical-based procedures, it is important to follow up with sun protection.

Vitamin C Iontophoresis

It is a treatment whereby high potency Vitamin C is applied to the skin using electrical charges to enhance delivery into the skin cells. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant which helps to repair and regenerate the skin, at the same time lightening pigmentation, dark eye circles and acne blemishes. After the treatment, a hyaluronate mask is applied to skin, enhancing the radiance and glow.

Under a dermatologist’s care, many people with melasma have a good outcome. Melasma can be stubborn, though. It may take a few months of treatment to see improvement. It is important to follow your dermatologist’s advice.

Myth – Pigmentation can be completely eradicated Myth

Many of the over the counter lightening creams claim to eradicate pigmentation, but this is not possible. Pigmentation depends on many factors like genetic predisposition, hormonal changes and lifestyle choices. Asian women are particularly prone to this problem due to the increased melanin in their skin.

The use of laser and light therapy, or deep chemical peels together with the appropriate prescription-based skin care, can cause a lightening effect. Although this problem cannot be completely eradicated, there are ways whereby it can be greatly improved.

Quote

The evidence-based treatments that I use in my office have made me aware of the stark contrast between what people are being sold, and what actually works to alleviate certain skin problems. My goal is to provide safe and effective treatments, and I have been greatly encouraged by my patients’ clinical outcomes.
